In 2002, as a nascent weaver, I began collecting what are called “thrums”- the left-overs that flow through a loom that are not actually able to be woven, or the loom’s waste. I would knot them together and then use a process called “finger knitting” to create a cord. Finger knit cordage is relatively useless, and traditionally the technique was utilized to instruct child laborers in the basics of a knitting machine. Originally I wanted to create a mile of waste that had woven through my fingers, and I would perform the process publicly- on the bus, in line at the DMV, in classes during lectures- thereby documenting idle or wasted time as well as wasted thread. But soon a mile became 2 miles, and eventually loom waste became the left-over yarns from not only my projects, but the projects of dear (and sometimes departed) friends and neighbors. I began to always knit with 2 threads to avoid breakage and create unlikely, chaotic juxtapositions. 2 miles became 3 miles and I attempted to challenge the world record, which is a whole ‘nother story. Now, at over 4 miles, the ball no longer fits through standard sized doors and weighs around to 120lbs. Currently this ongoing piece is titled “One of the World’s Largest Balls of Finger Knitting,”  and resides in its own horse trailer, awaiting the day when it will ease on down the road to a future exhibition.  Performances around this piece have been poorly documented and rather frequent.
